The start date for BCLEA Class 2009, anticipated to be early 2009, will be announced later this year. Specific instructions, costs, and electronic forms will be posted on this web site.
You must obtain a physical at your own expense and obtain a letter of fitness from your physician clearing you for the physical and mental rigors of a police academy.
Physical fitness is the most important aspect of any police academy. If you have not embarked on a program of physical fitness, you should do so immediately after obtaining clearance from your physician.
A physical fitness test battery consisting of the vertical leap, sit-ups, push-ups, 300-meter run, and 1.5 mile run will be administered on the first day. The standards are specified in NAC 289.200 and require a minimum vertical leap of 14 inches, no less than 15 sit-ups in one minute, no less than 18 push-ups, a 300-meter run in not more than 77 seconds, and a 1.5 miles run in not more than 17 minutes and 17 seconds. Successfully passing the physical fitness test battery is mandatory for graduation from the BCLEA.
It is recommended that you have at least one pair of quality running shoes and one pair of quality footgear for the Academy. From the Recruit Manual: "Duty footgear should be the accepted color of your agency (usually black) and match your duty gear. The style shall be boot or shoe of solid color, low heel, smooth round toe, plain finish, and without ornamentation. Combat boots, "Reebok"-type athletic shoes, and patent leather shoes are not allowed. "
Do not wait until the Academy starts to "break in" your footgear.
