Frequently asked questions regarding utility bills:

Q. Why is my bill so high?

A. We will review previous usage history. If we agree that the usage appears unusual, we will have the meters read at no charge. If the readings are correct, we can arrange for the City's Energy Conservation Specialist to do an on-site evaluation of your usage. Many times a faulty water softener or air conditioner can be the cause of high bills.

Q. I'm going on vacation. Can I pre-pay my bill?

A. Your bill can be estimated using the past year's history. You may also sign up for direct pay. This service automatically charges your checking or savings account each month with the amount of your utility bill.

Q. What happens if my tenant doesn't pay his final bill when he moves out?

A. Unpaid utility bills become the responsibility of the property owner.

Q. How can I tell if I have a water leak?

A. Make sure the water in the house and yard are off. Remove the lid of the water box and look to see if the dials are turning. With all water off, they should not be turning. If they are, you have a water leak.

Q. If I have a leak, who pays for the water consumption?

A. If the leak is between the curb stop and the house, it is the customer's responsibility. Extended payment arrangements are available under these circumstances. The City is responsible for leaks between the street or alley to the meter.

Q. How long in advance do I need to let you know when I want my service connected or disconnected?

A. Generally 48 hours is sufficient, although this service is not available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday as our offices are closed.

Q. What if I have an emergency situation involving water or electric and the Utility Office is closed?

A. Contact the Boulder City Police Department in emergency situations.

Q. Can I pay my bill and/or deposit by debit or credit card?

A. Yes.

Frequently asked questions regarding businesses and licenses:

Q. What do I need to start a business in Boulder City?

A. Contact the Utility Office at (702) 293-9219 for specific requirements. Generally speaking, most licenses fall under two categories: Resident License, which is a business whose principal place of operation is located in Boulder City, and Non-Resident License, which is a business whose principal place of operation is located outside Boulder City. Each type of license requires the following:  a properly completed business license application, fire, police and zoning inspections, registration with Department of Taxation, a Clark County health permit (when food is involved) and a copy of the Affirmation of Compliance from the State of Nevada Division of Industrial Insurance.

Q. Can I operate my business from my home?

A. Yes.  Any business wishing to use their home for their place of business must first apply for a "Home Occupation Permit" through the Community Development Department. Certain criteria must be met before receiving approval. After receipt of the Home Occupation Permit, a business license may be issued.

Q. My club wants to hold a fund raiser. Do we need a permit or license?

A. Yes.  Raffles and other similar fund raisers are considered gambling. A special permit for these types of activities may be issued to non-profit organizations. The Boulder City Licensing Board must approve all gaming permits. You can obtain the application from the Utility Office. Proof of non-profit status is required.

Q. Do I need a permit or license for a garage sale?

A. Yes. Garage Sale Permits can be obtained through the Utility Office at no charge.

Q. Does my pet need a license?

A. Yes.  All dogs, cats and pot-bellied pigs are required to have an animal license. Proof of rabies vaccination must be furnished at the time the license is requested. Licenses may be obtained at the Utility Office or Boulder City Animal Control Office. Licenses are due January 1st of each year and become delinquent February 1st of each year.

Q. Can I sell liquor and have gaming in my business in Boulder City?

A. Gaming is prohibited in Boulder City. Liquor licenses are subject to approval of the Boulder City Liquor Board and are issued for a period of one year.
