Air Conditioner Rebate Program

The Air Conditioner Rebate Program is available to all Boulder City residential electric customers with existing central air conditioning and heat pump systems. The following eligibility requirements apply:

  1. To be eligible for a rebate, the system must be a new central installation that replaces* an existing central air conditioner, heat pump, Gas Pack heating and cooling units in an existing home in the Boulder City electric service territory.
  2. The program only applies to central air conditioning, heat pump, and ductless split systems.  Window or single-room AC units are ineligible to receive incentives.
  3. AC units require installation by a contractor on the “Approved Participating Contractor” list.
  4. Installed HVAC units must be a minimum Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating of 14 and must be replacing a unit with a SEER of less than 14.
  5. Rebates in the amount of $50.00 per ton for mobile homes only with a S.E.E.R. rating of 13.0 to 13.9.
  6. A completed rebate application form must be submitted within 60 days of the installation date.
  7. A dated contractor invoice will be required as proof of installation date.
  8. Residential purchasers of qualifying equipment may be subject to an on-site inspection by a Boulder City representative to verify equipment is properly installed and operational.
  9. A completed building permit that has been finaled is required.
  10. Rebate amounts are per unit.

* Replacement is defined as the replacement of the electric-driven cooling system (i.e., condenser, blower, coils, etc.) or cooling or heating system in the case of heat pumps.

What is SEER?
The efficiency of heat pumps and air conditioners is expressed by the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER).  The higher the SEER number, the more cooling you will get for your money.  The SEER will be listed on the yellow-and-black Energy Guide located on the unit. The SEER is defined as the total cooling output in British thermal units or Btu provided by the unit during its normal annual usage period divided by its total energy input (in watt-hours during the same period).

Replacing Old Equipment: Why it is important?
A central A/C system is designed to last 12-18 years, so in some cases savings and reliability are limited due to equipment age. Your A/C contractor can help you decide when it is time to replace your old equipment with high efficiency equipment before your system breaks down and leaves you in the heat.

Duct Testing: Why Is It Important?
The ducts that are part of central heating and cooling systems offer one of the best opportunities to increase your energy efficiency, increase your comfort, and manage your energy bills. Studies indicate that 28%-35% of the heated or cooled air is lost-along with the money spent to heat or cool that air-through leaky ducts. Properly sized, installed, and sealed ductwork will make your heating and cooling systems significantly more efficient.

Refrigerant Charge and Airflow: Why is it important?
A system refrigerant check-up is a recommended service that should be performed when the equipment is first installed and during annual system check-ups. A refrigerant charge should be conducted if the system check indicates that one is needed. Once the system has been properly charged with refrigerant and has good airflow across the indoor coil, and assuming there is no damage to the duct system, only basic service such as changing filters and cleaning the outdoor unit annually should be needed to maintain the system operation at peak performance levels.
