The Public Works Department has prepared the plans and specifications for the Arizona Street Reconstruction Project. This project is the design and construction of underground utility installations, sidewalk and curb and gutter replacements and pavement replacement on Arizona Street between Nevada Way and Utah Street.
The construction work hours will be between 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning. The only scheduled exception to these hours will be for water shut downs necessary to facilitate the work. Shut downs will be scheduled from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday nights only. The contractor will be required to provide five days and 24 hour notices for the shut downs. There may also be 2-hour scheduled water outages to switch out services. These 2-hour outages will be coordinated and scheduled with the affected business/property.
First will be the underground utility work which will include the installation of utility conduits, vaults and equipment pads, replacement of water service laterals, water valves and fire hydrants. Backflow prevention devices will be installed on the new water services in compliance with state law. There will be disruptions to water service to replace old, broken valves and services. All water line shut downs to facilitate the work will be scheduled at night from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. There may also be 2-hour scheduled water outages to switch out services. Electric Division crews will install the cable in the conduits and equipment on the pads at a future date. The Contractor will install the street light wiring in the new street light conduits. The existing street lights will be without power for approximately two to three months during the installation of the new utility conduits, transformer, service pedestal and wiring to re-energize the lights.
Second will be the concrete work which will include removal and replacement of failed and deteriorated concrete sidewalk, curb and gutter, and the removal of existing and installation of new ADA ramps at intersection corners where the existing ramps do not meet current standards. Not all of the existing sidewalks, ramps and curbs and gutters will be replaced, only sections that need to be replaced. Staff anticipates this work starting approximately two months after the start of the underground utility work.
Finally, will be the pavement replacement which will include repaving and striping of the roadway. The existing pavement will be pulverized and blended with the existing base material to create the new base. The roadway will then be paved and striped. The existing concrete pavement at Hotel Plaza and stamped, colored concrete crosswalks will be protected in place to the greatest extent possible. Staff anticipates this work starting approximately one month after the start of the concrete work.
The project will take approximately six months to complete. The underground utility project is being advertised for bids on Thursday June 15, 2017. The concrete and pavement contracts are scheduled to be advertised on Thursday June 22, 2017. All bids will be due on July 6, 2017. Staff anticipates recommending award for the projects to the City Council in August 2017. Therefore, construction of the underground utility portion of the project will begin in September 2017.
Being a property or business owner in the project area, you will be affected by the construction. The contractors selected for the work will be required by the contract documents to provide access to all properties and businesses at all times during construction of the improvements.
