BOULDER CITY – Boulder City Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies statewide for heighten enforcement of the state’s pedestrian safety laws. Through March 15, 2020, extra traffic patrol deputies will be looking for violators. Funding for extra patrols comes from Joining Forces grants provided by the Nevada Department of Public Safety/Office of Traffic Safety.

All road users, drivers and pedestrians, need to remember and obey the basic rules of the road that put in place to help save lives.

Pedestrians:

• Use intersections and marked mid-block crosswalks only

• Between dusk and dawn, wear bright clothing or accessories that can be seen at night

• Continue to look for oncoming traffic until the other side of the road is reached

• Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the street

Drivers:

• Obey speed limits and know when conditions warrant even slower speeds, including streets that are not well lit

• Check intersections and mid-block crosswalks for waiting pedestrians, and yield to them

• Make eye contact with pedestrians waiting to cross the street

“The bottom line is motorists, no matter what type of vehicle, have some sort protection from injury in a collision; pedestrians and bicyclists are more vulnerable,” said Boulder City Police Chief Tim Shea. “We ask drivers to respect those around you and their right to safely share the road. Never drive distracted. Stay alert and focused on the road, bike lanes and sidewalks.”

Boulder City Police Department remains dedicated to bringing the number of fatalities on our roadways to zero through increasing public awareness about the safety on our streets. For more information about Nevada’s pedestrian safety laws, visit: https://zerofatalitiesnv.com/be-pedestrian-safe/.
