[ARCHIVED] Public Power Week Runs October 6-12, 2024

Public Power Week 2024: Electrical worker and elementary school child riding in power truck bucket

BOULDER CITY – Did you know that Boulder City is still one of the lowest-cost providers of electricity, not just in Nevada, but in the entire country? Most of our power comes from renewable energy: more than half from hydroelectric sources (Hoover Dam and Glen Canyon); nearly a quarter from solar energy, the other quarter from natural gas. Starting Sunday, we recognize Public Power Week, which runs from October 6 through Saturday, October 12, 2024.

This year, the Electrical Division of the Boulder City Utilities Department worked with both Andrew J. Mitchell and Martha P. King Elementary Schools, teaching youth about electricity. On Monday, September 30, students in grades K-5 had a chance to check out equipment and trucks, as well as watch demonstrations about electricity. “Teachers rewarded several students by letting them go up in a bucket truck, where they could see from the vantage point of our employees,” said Utilities Director Joe Stubitz. “My hope is that we inspire our future workforce by showing children some of the great work that we do. We also teamed up this year with Overton Power District 5, who brought a trailer to show kids just how dangerous live wires can be.” (Video of the event is available at https://youtu.be/5T45t9GBkhA.)

Boulder City’s utility cannot generate a profit and is an enterprise fund, which means it is a self-supporting government fund, selling goods and services to the public for a fee. As a community-owned utility, it is governed by local decision-makers: City Council of Boulder City. Residents on the Utility Advisory Committee provide recommendations to Council. Boulder City’s Utilities Department provides power to more than 8,000 residential and business customers. We are one of 2,000 public power utilities that provide electricity to 49 million people across the country.

According to the American Public Power Association, “Public power utilities have the lowest overall rate in 36 states. In 2022, the average residential rate for public power utilities nationwide was 14-cents per kilowatt-hour. Looking at simulated average monthly electricity use and rates, public power customers have the lowest bills and pay nine percent less than customers of other utility types.”

If you happen to see one of Boulder City’s Electrical workers next week, please take a moment to thank them for all that they do!!
